... Heat advisory in effect from noon to 8 PM EDT Saturday...
The National Weather Service in Burlington has issued a heat
advisory, which is in effect from noon to 8 PM EDT Saturday.
* Locations... northern Adirondacks in New York as well as central
and northern Vermont, including the Northeast Kingdom.
* Heat index values... 95 to 100 due to temperatures in the upper
80s to lower 90s, and dewpoints around 70.
* Timing... the highest heat index values will occur between noon
and 5 PM on Saturday.
* Impacts... the high heat index values pose a significant risk
for heat stress and heat-related illness for everyone,
especially those vulnerable populations without air
conditioning and those spending significant time outdoors.
Heat-related illnesses can occur very quickly. Pets are also
susceptible to heat illness. Additionally car interiors can
reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
A heat advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is
expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity
will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are
possible. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room,
stay out of the sun, and check in on relatives and neighbors.
Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible
and drink plenty of water.
