Central Ohio

For all of the attention that yesterday drew from around the country, yesterday's event should be considered a bust. The derecho never was.

The bow echo that developed in the late night and early morning hours of Wednesday and Thursday began to look like your classic derecho. The hype from the SPC, putting us under a PDS Severe Thunderstorm Watch for the first time I can ever remember, local and national media suggested this could be worst than last year's. Everything was in place.

When our initial Tornado Watch expired it was replaced with the PDS Watch I mentioned. This was to cover for the impending derecho. You can even see in the watch detail below the ominous bow:

The weather radio rang out at 12:53am as the first warning barely grazed Franklin County. Later, around 1:20am, the warning that actually covered Canal Winchester was issued. I watched on Wunderground's PWS map at wind speeds as the bow echo crossed the county and was not impressed. Maybe a 40mph gust at one location.

So I stood at my door as the storm finally blew in right around 2am. The result? Some heavy rain and a max wind gust at 2:04am of 35mph.

After all of that, if this wasn't a bust I don't know what is.

In the end the SPC stated that this would not even be classified as a derecho. The wind speeds stayed mainly under 50mph for most of the duration, and this storm was not going to be historic by any means.

We all got fool. I did for sure. I talked about it all day, how this thing would eventually form. And... it didn't. Instead we end up with even more rain (now at 3.15" for the month), and our first ever PDS Severe Thunderstorm Watch.

And the severe drought continues.

I've started a new post to post up to date information regarding tonight's derecho that is just now beginning to form near Chicago.

6:27pm
Just as I started writing this post we have been placed under our first Tornado Watch of the season here in Columbus. This is not for the derecho, rather for the late evening risk of supercells that have began to develop northeast of us.

Personally I'd be surprised if we saw anything down he...

This is one of those days that don't come around too often here in Ohio where we are in the bullseye for a major severe weather outbreak. The SPC's latest risk outlook has us in the moderate risk range, our first of the year:

Today has two threats.

Afternoon Supercell Threat
The conditions are right for some major storms, with the capability for tornadoes. Below is a good representation of the atmosphere south of the warm front...

While I haven't written anything in the month of June, it certainly hasn't been quiet... and I had a good reason for the 11 days of silence.

You see, I took a good old fashioned family vacation at the beginning of the month. Sure, it sounds fun, and a little bit of a break from my unhealthy weather obsession until you realize a few days before your trip that the Gulf may see its first named storm while you're at Disney World.

Sure enough, Tropi...

We're looking at our second straight day in a slight risk for severe weather here in Central Ohio, but today seems like a much more widespread chance than yesterday.

First the SPC's severe outlook:

The change from the earlier outlooks is that the threat extends further east, which is a product of the location of the greatest forcing this afternoon.

For us this afternoon I expect the most potent storms to be in the southeast po...
