There is no more weather to talk about in Texas. There are only degrees of hot :P

So I'm heading to 50 and have only played one home video game more than once. The spouse got me a cellphone a few years ago that I rarely carry. Everywhere I see people peering intently into their palms while giving loving finger strokes to some flat thing cradled in their hand.

Am I missing something?

In celebration of paying off the house and getting news I can make long term plans, I decided to get a Smart Phone...Having no idea whatsoever what they do or what to look for. I just wanted the biggest screen possible short of a tablet. We found a carrier that had the best plan for our area and shopped them for a phone.

As luck would have it, Costco had the big phone $300 cheaper than the carriers store. Plus, I got another one free. So we both got smart phones; The Samsung Galaxys2 and s3.
Didn't know it was this years smart phone darling. I just wanted a big screen and lots of memory so I could load music in it like an ipod.

Now I'm finding out about apps. They have a pinball app! Okay, that's a game I'll play. There is some app called Evernote that has been handy for jotting things down.
So, does anyone know a better app for "to-do" lists, notes etc that doesn't go...to The Cloud. How about a calender to write my appointments and birthdays on.

And, which are the good Compass, level, measuring tape, tool apps?

Because I don't know what I don't know about these phones, are there things to look out for and don't do?
Are there apps that you think are the greatest things since sliced bread?

Let's talk about smart phones.

Troll Hunt Anyone? See #9

Ad Zombies, Robo-Trolls, purveyors of poorly translated plagerisms with questionable links to questionable products. I've noticed many folks in WUville are getting tired of these robo-blogs.

Let's take 'em out. If you have a good virus protection program on your computer, this is important because a lot of these come loaded with bad things. How about a bunch of us going through these and clicking the "!" button. Perhaps this will get the new weatherchannel admin to take these out of the blogs.

Be sure not to click on any of the links.

Speaking of advertising, all the fun web sites that you go to, including this one are usually supported by the annoying ads. In fairness, to pay dues, when coming to the blogs try to click on one "mainstream" ad everytime. You don't have to read it. They get their revenue through clicks. Don't click on cheap looking ads for product you never heard of. These can have malware. Only click mainstream stuff.
This will help ensure that our blogs stay here because the soul sucking corporate giant is making money on them....if they don't, well you know what happens then.

Some fun with the "ad generators". They pick out key words and tailor adds to them. Just for grins we should have an "Add Zombie Day".

Type several times in your blog; Zombies, living dead, gothic, survival and see what kind of adds turn up. If a lot of blogs do this the results should be hilarious.

Let's keep this a robo-troll free zone...or if we are stuck with them, at least make them entertaining.

In Memory of Sally Ride

As a young girl I had very few women role models that made science into something cool, a place where smart girls become doctors, scientists, astronauts.
Then came Sally Ride.

She did what she wanted to do. She embraced being smart, goal oriented and tough enough to have the right stuff. She reached for the stars and touched them. She was a woman of few words so this tribute is for her.

Artsy Camera Shake

So, it's taken awhile to get around to playing with all the photos I've shot lately.
During the Fourth it was really windy and I have a bit of a problem with camera shake anyways.
I thought these photos turned out pretty cool though.

Meanwhile, I will be researching computer security that is up to date and in regular peoples language so the rest of us can benefit from it.

Family Heirlooms

A Family Heirloom
What we pass down from generation to generation defines what we value. Some families pass down books containing the family tree. One family I know passes down a heavy metal ironing board. (It goes to the favorite daughter). In some families the kids just wait for someone to die and pass them money.

Then there are some families that pass down a place and it's memories. We were invited by friends to go to Beavers Bend State Park in Oklahoma. They had been going there since they were kids. They then brought their kids and now grand kids.

Nestled amid tall trees and bordered by a river, many RV's and tents shared a time to tell old stories and make new ones. A family reunion was happening next to us. They explain that every year the Texas side and the Arkansas side meet here to play a game that resembles horse-shoes called "washers". The winners take an old trophy back to their state.

Up the road another family had set up an extreme croquet challenge on a slope full of rocks and brush. The park was full of annual family reunions. Can a public place become a family heirloom? I think so.
