Atlantic still quiet, new wave moves off Africa
Posted by: Dr. Jeff Masters, 7:08 PM GMT on July 29, 2008 +5
After a busy last few weeks, it seems that things have quieted down in the Atlantic. The only 'excitement' to be had is a new wave that has just moved off the coast of Africa. Convection in the wave is limited and certainly not organized. Development is not expected, but we will continue to monitor the system if only for a lack of anything else to watch.

Them dumb NHC people! There are plenty of showers with this system...look at all them -30C cloud tops! This thing should be a Cat 1 what are they talking about??

I think the NHC are very much qualified to say that. SST's in front of the wave are cooler, as noted earlier by the stratocu....envoronment is not that favorable. Like I said before, data out in the far eastern Atlantic is very sparse. It's really any man's guess as to what it will do initially.

My opinion, and this is just mine. NHC is doing the best with what they have with, after 05, is a very rough and critical audiance. Yet we still hang on their words. Kudos to them.

Hey, out of lurking to say I also live in NOLA. Not funny.

Basically, the Caribbean system will move NNW, then NW straight into the middle of the Gulf, move over a warm eddy, blossom into a CAT 5, then move straight into New Orleans. There I said it. Haha

(Let's hope that keeps StormTop and all his incarnations subdued for a while, lol)

satellite loops show that mess of convection in the NE GoM has a clockwise rotation...do high pressure systems generate convection? here in Texas, high pressure usually suppresses shower activity!

WTF?!?!?! LOL

If you look...the thunderstorm activity is poorly organized. You can see its just a shapeless mass of thunderstorms that is sprawled out across the NE Gulf because of high shear.
