World's Largest Weather Instrument
Posted by: Dr. Jeff Masters, 5:05 PM GMT on August 05, 2005 +0
If you've driving the stretch of I-15 between Los Angeles and Las Vegas and get off at the Baker exit near Death Valley, you have the opportunity to see the ultimate tacky weather object--the world's tallest thermometer. Rising a full 134 feet above the dusty streets of Baker (population: 700),
the working thermometer is the brainchild of Baker resident Willis Herron, who spent $700,000 erecting the huge instrument. In an article in the June 2005 issue of the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society, Willis says: "Awww, I know it's tacky. But I also know people won't be able to pass it more than four or five times without saying, 'What is that?'". And hopefully pull off the expressway to take a look--and buy a burger at the Mad Greek restaurant or a slice of strawberry pie at the original Bun Boy restaurant, now owned by Steve Carter, whom Herron sold the thermometer to in 2000.

The thermometer weighs 76,812 pounds, sports 4900 light bulbs, and is held together by 125 cubic yards of concrete--much of this added after 70-mph winds snapped the thermometer in half shortly after it was built in 1991. The 134 foot height is symbolic of the 134 degree maximum temperature recorded in Death Valley in 1913--the all-time record for North America.

For what it's worth, I really think it's unlikely that Irene will threaten anything or develop into anything much. However, there continues to be a lot of activity throughout the basin and I would not be surprised if we have some more depressions this week.

no Texas really needs the rain it can go there but just let it be a strong Tropical Storm no major hurricane no one deserves that.

LOL there has been already alot of severe thunderstorm damage esspecially in central florida hurricanes will only help destroy all ready damaged areas and others that haven't or that suffered damage from last year, this icredible amount of severe weather in florida is getting crazy...

actually if you think about Florida had 3 hits charlie, fran and jeanne...but three on north gulf coast within 80 miles of each other is RARE...The state of florida has lots of coast..and charlie was on west side..although Ivan made land fall in baldwin ,co. al. florida still shared it..

LOL here in tampa the outer edges of tiny hurricane charley and weakened cat 1 jeanne and francis (after crossing the state) was purty darn crazy 80 mph winds ten inches with jeanne 7 with francis and a mere 1.5 - 2 from one or 2 outer bands from charley I live near tampa closer to clearwater beach.
686. Raysfan70 1:07 AM GMT on August 08, 2005
here in tampa we had bad storms around 2:00-2:30 that kept shutting the power down. He have really been lucky in Tampa more in Pinelass County then here. But Orlando has had it really bad the last few days. Florida doesn't need anymore Hurricanes. I got lucky here no tree damage nothing 24 hours without power. Now other parts here got hit hard.

Not really.. look at the old radar image at landfall (if you can find it that is) I believe that it hit both but they coudnt say both so they gave it to alabama because of florida being already hit by charley and francis just my guess.Oh and the eastern side of Ivan was also alot worse than the left side rain wind and all...And they DO consider florida to officially 4 hurricane landfalls.

Ya the thunderstorm we had here in pinnelas dumped about a little over 2 inches in about a half hour and we had rain rates of 3.5 to maybe 5.0 inches per hour and wind gusts to about 40 - 50mph briefely and a large amount of lightning but nothing new to florida lol,the heavy wind driven rain in sheets or walls was very tropical in nature, gave me a little memories of last yar just a little lol.
692. outrocket 1:18 AM GMT on August 08, 2005
ray,not always,,Frederic 79 cat3..camille 69 cat5 they don't alway's weaken..some have lately,but where tampa is dont bank on one to weaken...example the fast intensification of charlie...

checking eye of the storm for Ivan. He did not make landfall in florida the first time. He did go across florida when he went down the east coast to later redevelop in the gulf.

See here we got it pretty bad transformers blowing out constantly roaring winds up to maybe as high as 80mph didn,t have any anomometor at the time but I basically guessed based on st pete clearwater airport obs.Rain rates I think were as high as nearly 7 inches per hour in jeanne and a some roof damage in my area(Moblie homes:2 completely lost their roofs). And we only lost power for brief pwriods and we were the only ones in our area that still had power.Over all pretty crazy worst I have seen here so far since I have lived here, there were dangleing traffic signals and there were LOTS of tree branches and leaves everywhere and occaisional down trees only because we live near the coast and being that this is florida also. And the worst damage for me was a large transmission powerline (about 450,000 volts) fell of and hit the metal support and because I was out in the storm there was a HUGEexplosion sparks flew everywhere and it sounded like a bomb went off,and several times it got a little crazy when the powerlines were buzzing very loudly near our house and flashing bright red blue and orange.

because Florida..East pensacola got naile by NE quad and alot of the surge as Ivan made landfall in bama..
