Classic Wunderground will no longer be available after May 4, 2015.

By: WayneGee , 11:36 AM GMT on May 03, 2015

I am not a blogger, but I am interested in quality weather data without all the glitz.
Tomorrow is May 4th, the date that Wunderground classic is suppose to go away forever.
I went to add an entry in this blog: http://classic.wunderground.com/blog/admin/commen t.html?entrynum=5 only to find it locked because it is full at 2000 comments.
So if you have any further comments about Classic, be my guest

Huh - where did GRRL's post go?

Did the powers-that-be not like the suggestion of removing PWS devices?

The new owners of WU have deleted our WU Photos. Is now deleting our blogs, yet wants us to give data from our weather stations to them for free.

Pull your station. No community. No free data.

This is now certainly the 11th hour.

However, from the ashes - something positive:

Anyone interested in the WunderPhotos - I just learned that a group has been formed on FLICKR!

If you are interested, check it out at:

Take care all. I truly will miss this conversation.

Thanks, Cyber I was hoping someone would close. Wayne graciously kept this blog alive for us. There were still comments now and then even after he was thinking of closing it. I have often referred to a certain item in my kitchen as a 'Douglas Adams refrigerator' . I just cleaned it though.

Well, here we are, only days away from personal blogs (like this one) being shut down. It's a shame, really; it seems as though everything that made WU community-friendly is being discontinued.

I know this is someone's business decision, and their reasoning told them this was the choice to make. However, I disagree - and I believe a lot of you feel the same. IMO, when the last of the community features are shut down, a lot of folks who currently view WU will walk away, never to return. What a pity; it really does not need to happen.

Before the plug is pulled, I just wanted to say that it has been enjoyable sharing my thoughts with you on this subject we all care about. I will miss this.

But, all good things must come to an end, and I wish you all the best.

As Douglas Adams might say-

"So long, and thanks for all the fish!"

Goodbye forever, WU.

Following the death of Classic, I had close to two good years using the iPhone version on my browser (i.wund.com); not as functional as Classic, but still decent information and access to personal weather stations.

Over the weekend, that changed. It now appears that the less-functional mobile site (m.wund.com) and the iPhone site have morphed into one big mess. I managed to avoid the "upgrades" for quite a long time now, but they've caught up. Looks like NWS and Air Sports are my new primary sources for weather.

Cyber I believe that's correct, but the associated comments with the old blogs will not be archived. Sad because a lot of the neat stuff was in the comments.
Hades, hope you're out there. I've been reading a lot of comments on members and main blog groups, and I think there's a LOT of misunderstanding about what's happening. Someone needs to explain somewhere in clear, non tech jargon plain English exactly what will stay and disappear before people are lost to WU unnecessarily .

Unless something changes, my understanding is that blogs like this one will be locked / archived.

So, this conversation will most likely end on April 3.

I find WU unclear in their statements but I believe the professional weather blogs, such as those of Masters will remain. I think it's just the social (Member?) blogs that are going.also if I understand correctly

ya, it's a little unclear how the "message board" will look like. something like 4-5 blogs that will be associated to CAT6 which does include current feature bloggers.

Anything else that could be below the CAT6 sections is still unknown. Hoping some other things will be allowed (like group blogs or something).

Cyber, I think in a lot if not most cases the blogs were closely connected to the photos. Some of us assumed when photos went, so would the blogs. I find WU unclear in their statements but I believe the professional weather blogs, such as those of Masters will remain. I think it's just the social (Member?) blogs that are going.also if I understand correctly, the old blogs will remain in an archive (without the comments?) .

I know it's been gone a long while, but I still miss it. I rarely use the new one, there are plenty of other better websites. That wasn't the case at one time.

Fronts is fine now. I was pleasantly surprised to see a moderator here. I have a radar question. On the NEXRAD it keeps saying there are no Doppler detected storms but there are a whole slew of meso and even hail symbols ( yellow diamonds and squares). There used to be a table showing cloud heights, probability of hail, etc. Am I missing a link somewhere?

Recently found out it's called the Storm Attributes Table.

No Question - the 4 areas I'm in most

I have one blog with photos that I am very attached to. Classic had a photo on the main page every day that was visible at a glance and it drew you in to looking at other photos. Once there was a separate page for Photos this 'teaser' went away. I realized that's why I didn't look at the photos as much. Maybe that was true in your case Cy. Comments and blogs aren't working well. Sorry if this doesn't go through right.

Wow - WunderPhotos was one of the last nice things about WU. I must admit, since they did away with the Classic page, I have not participated much at all in any aspect of WU, including Photos. But, WunderPhotos always had a dedicated and faithful community, and now they got the shaft just like those of us who loved the Classic page.

It looks like WeatherForYou has gone simple minded. Last week it use to be mouse interactive, now you cant zoom in with the scroll wheel and it no longer takes presets.
I think all these sites gave up on PC people and are putting their efforts to phones and tablets.
I guess I will need to find someplace else for my FAST weather fix

WU still sucks - all the wasted white space and decreased information available without scrolling all over the place. I miss old Classic and don't use WU anymore. This includes TWC - they quit telling about current weather years ago....

They may as well rename it Blundermap

Have only recently found out about the demise of the Classic version of WU site as I'm not used to comment on here, nor follow the blogs, but here goes anyway: just like the rest, I've been absolutely shocked beyond words to see the old site just gone. Certainly the screenshots from user 'Fieldofflowers' (in the original thread) will be the epitaph of what this site (as a whole) once was, and what greatness it once had...

Anyway, I have only discovered WU by accident in 2014, so it hasn't been a long story perhaps. But still, I loved Classic WU so much that decided to subscribe immediately. Found it useful and pleasant to the eye, too.

For instance, I would often love to use the Classic version to view and print out the historical weather data, or metar data for the airports from certain days etc. And they would all look beautifully - both the on-screen data as well as the printouts! I mean: the printouts would at least actually fit in ALL the data on the page. Nowadays, with the new version which I shall call the rubbish version, printouts don't even come out correctly - the last column of events/conditions is completely gone and won't fit in with that default 'print the page' facility that the website uses. That in itself is a huge disappointment.

But, the crux of the matter seems to me to be the following:-

1. What on Earth is wrong with offering people / users / customers even (as some people indeed elected to pay for this service when not required to do so, and some of them have even been contributing for years!) - so what's wrong with offering the CHOICE between the two versions? So that anyone could perhaps choose the version they might prefer and liked best? Is that such a radical idea all of a sudden? I totally understand that fascism nowadays is on the rise, but do WU bosses really have to follow the suit?! I mean, okay, here's what I mean: keep the rubbish version if you must, but by all means don't abandon the Classic version. I could just as likely understand if they wanted to 'encourage' users to get used to the rubbish version - I would not like it, but surely would understand. Or if they clearly signalled their own preference to the rubbish version at the expense of the Classic WU, but removing one version of the site altogether strikes me as way, way too disproportionate as a solution.

2. In a farewell post from that twat (was John his name or something?), we read that high costs have been the decisive issue. So here's a few humble proposals for a solution from my side:
(a) how about explaining the problem (with breakdown of costs etc.) and asking the users or prospective users - well in advance - to donate to support the Classic site? Not a strange idea is it? I mean, if I can see bloody Wikipedia asking me for money every month or so, which I happily don't ever give 'em, it shows it can be done and doesn't take a lot of effort to ask. And certainly, if that was the case, I gladly would at least consider support if Classic WU's future was at stake... Another and more recent example: in December the excellent archive.org wayback machine also held a public plea for a donation to keep their site alive - and guess what, somehow they reached their aim of $2m!
(b) Or, how about explaining the problem (with breakdown of costs etc.) and asking premium users - once again, well in advance - to contribute to the Classic version of WU -only? Wouldn't mind it even if they wanted to raise subscription fees accordingly as needed. I mean, those would have been the reasonable solutions and would form some contingency plan at least.
(c) But the next issue is this: how about consulting the users about this closure way before they announced it? (I note the original post / notice about closure was posted April 14th, while the predicted closure was set from May 5th. Clearly, with such a short notice, it was already impossible to even attempt to do anything about the Classic site.) So, in that regard, no consultation has ever been held - and none was intended to be held. And the announcement came much too late.
Now these thoughts lead me to the conclusion that the Classic version was never supposed to survive, or even given any chance to survive! In short, WU bosses have deliberately decided that one version should just go, no matter what. And that just strikes me as an idiotic approach - to put it mildly.

I see some alternatives have been suggested here and there, sure - but things'll never be the same again. (Unless, of course, somebody decides to magically revive this 'corpse' (and what a lovely corpse it was!).

Now, if you'll forgive me for rambling on, I shall make a separate post - the 'fatality' post I call it - wherein I shall directly address the note about closure.

I hardly ever post, but do not think these posts are not read. I too, am a long time classic fan. I still have not found a site that I can settle into. I just kind of go everywhere now and still check on the WU occasionally.

The classic demise shows what happens with corporate take overs and only thinking about the bottom line. If I were Jeff Masters, I would be pretty disappointed what they did to classic, but then he got his money and has moved on himself. All he wants to blog about today is global warming.

It would appear that it does include PWS data. From the InfoWeek article:

"IBM essentially purchased all the forecasting, analytics, and data assets, and also all of the brands and applications except for The Weather Channel television property. The deal includes The Weather Company's B2B, mobile and cloud-based Web properties, including WSI, weather.com, Weather Underground, and The Weather Company brand. The Weather Channel TV segment of the company will license weather forecast data and analytics from IBM under a long-term contract. "

IMO, I would rather have IBM own this than Bain Capital and the Blackstone Group. I guess, as has always been the case, if a PWS owner does not agree with this, they could pull their station.

Don't know anything about business or IT. Does this sale include PWS data? If so don't PWS owners resent or feel really weird about their data being shifted around and sold from one company to another? If I had a station and worked hard on it I'd feel personally involved with it, and uncomfortable with having no input or knowledge about what was going on with my data even if it was a teeny drop in a huge flood. Or do they feel this as a positive opportunity?

Sadly, I must agree with you. I still visit WU from time to time hoping against hope that the site I loved for so many years will have resurrected, but it is a lost dream. I get my weather info from other sites now -- all of which are better than the "new" WU but all of which also pale in comparison to the "real" WU. RIP WU you are gone but not forgotten.

I'm not sure what you mean by pulling down. I still refer to John C's blog now and then for the references, explanations, or ideas that were there. There were ideas here too. If you want to close comments I can see that, but some of ideas might still be helpful at some point to some people. I wish there were a way of collecting these helpful comments from both blogs onto one, with an index to them but I have no clue how this could be done.
