THE FINAL BLOG

By: joealaska , 9:11 PM GMT on March 10, 2017

OK OK, I can take a hint. I always thought it would be my decision at some point to stop the blog. It turns out was somebody else’s choice. If I cannot post photos, and if I cannot write the blog, I have run out of interest in doing anything else on WU.

Turns out there are other sites that are glad to let me do what I enjoy. Right now DISQUS seems to be a good place for the blog and commenting. While I will post a few pictures there, I am not crazy about them disappearing in a week. FLICKR is a good place to post the photos, and I am already getting people following me.

Making the switch can be a hassle, but most of you have figured out how to get past the initial glitches that come up. I really hope everyone who wants to follow can do so. Basically, this is the gist of this last blog. No sense in spending much time here at this point.

This particular blog will be updated and modified up until early April when it will be frozen in time. I will give all links to where I am going. Links may not work after that, but they will still be posted.

I have had a great time meeting all of you, especially the few of you I met in person. This is not a goodbye. It is just a posting of where we meet next.

I hope that is soon.

Joealaska is dead.

Thanks to all for your participation!

I am posting blogs at DISQUS.COM. I have a channel there called MONTANA BACK ROADS. My name there is "formerlyjoealaska."

On Facebook I am Joe Troje where I post photos.

On YOUTUBE I have hundreds of videos. If you go back to April of 2013 or before, it is all Alaska. You will find me there as Jayempty.

Here is the address to my FLICKR account where I will post most of my photos. My name on Flickr is "jayempty1". www.flickr.com/photos/123722234@N07
(Google "jayempty1 Flickr")

joealaska may be dead, but he is thriving on the internet. Just google "joealaska" (ONE WORD) and you should get one of my photos. You can follow the trail from there. I wonder if my photos will remain on the internet after WU deletes them?

Vid: Joe I enjoyed your discussion about what the roads are like under different conditions. You always make it look so easy it's hard to tell sometimes.
I love watching the weather on the trips! We're blocked in by hills here, so I don't get to see the expanse of weather we used to get in Houston.

Di, speaking of CA we were trying to find a local park one day, using a map ( before computers) but ended up driving on an irrigation canal right of way. Joe have you ever done that? Probably not you have more sense than we did.

20 miles south of Great Falls: Great scenery, really dramatic sky! It makes me miss my good ole days of meandering all over California, taking back roads and finding places where the crowds are left behind.

Much as I enjoyed your Dutch Harbor drives...it's an island and you could only drive so far, though you couldn't beat the scenery.

I've just been looking at a couple of Alaskan photos and ran into the Chow Porch is Closing Down. I don't know the story of Blacky, but I felt the loneliness and sadness in it - the loss of going away.

Join up Elsie. I am starting to put a lot of photos on FLICKR, and will be putting some of the best photos from the past couple years traveling in the RV, as well as when I was in Alaska.

DISQUS is where most of the comments are going. After a few hiccups, it looks like it will work.

Hi, I am also one of those who has been hiding in the shadows but only since TX last year when I saw your pictures of your cats (I'm a cat person). I only recently joined WU so that I can express thanks to the adventures and travels I've been on through others and revisiting AZ where I lived for many years decades ago and seeing Montana for the first time through your travels. Thank you! I'm not on social media and debating on whether to join so that I can still follow the adventures and travels and see parts of the world that I will never see. Thank you! Elsie

Dictionary definition of 'lurk'
"Chiefly Computers. to read or observe an ongoing discussion without participating in it, as on a message board."

Given that (like many words) the modern, widespread usage has altered to confer an alternative meaning, the term lurker has no negative/ wrongdoing associations in this context. It mystifies me why anyone could take offence if they understand its common use within that all important context.

Old5 that was well said and encouraging.
I've seen the term "lurker" all over the blogs. I don't like it. It implies in usual language a demeaning, stalking, hiding activity. I don't believe it should apply to someone who simply doesn't choose or have the time to comment.
Those adventures of Joe's. We hold them dearly too.
I hope you can come too. You are wise.

Hey Joe, aka: 'jayempty1,'
As you have now chosen multiple new forums to participate and continue the Alaska initiated blog and imagery that has generated the loyal following of active participants, as well as the several "lurkers," such as myself, (your designated category choice of description of which I fall into), and a moniker of which I take no particular offence. Please allow me to enlighten you that the acronym, 'IBM,' which is the parent company of WU, has long been referred to by those of us who, for many years, worked for wages as sub-contract Design Engineers in the Aerospace Industry for multiple Aerospace Military Equipment suppliers as well as industrial giants such as IBM, and we, as sub-contract employees, recognized early on in the industry that the acronym IBM could also simply mean, "I've Been Moved" .. Therefore, in my humble opinion, 'JoeAlaska' is not dead as you have stated but, simply put, "You've been moved."

For many years now I've enjoyed my time as a "lurker" (your choice of words) while reading the blog posts, viewing the all the images posted and the diverse commentary from the regular contributors, and occasionally from a "lurker," and I will sincerely miss my daily "fix" of the images of your idle time drives and the commentary of those adventures you hold so dearly.

I'm not certain the this "old5andimer" will follow the ride along to any of the platforms that have been suggested, especially FB, but the need to comment on your statement of "JoeAlaska is dead' dictated that I (as a lurker) post this comment. Obviously, I wish you and your regular blog contributors well in the future and with the change of platforms. And for myself, I will try and follow along as well as possible with your driving adventures as they are posted on YouTube.

Adious !
from the old5andimer

Quoting 19. BriarCraft:

Not having much luck finding you on Flickr, Joe - unless your only photos are of your new Baby and your Baby Momma in 2006! If InsideUK ever gets wind of that, you'll never hear the end of it! I'm just sayin'...

I found those baby pics too Briarcraft! I wondered if he might be taking paternity leave just now?!
It was only coming out of the Flickr app and going in via a desktop that I could track down Joe and his Montana photos!

I just followed you, so you should now be able to see the accounts I have followed and there you will find Joealaska and Dave Haupt from this blog!

When I get back to the desktop I will post the link here for his Flickr account, but on iPad it just defaults back to the app from which I can achieve very little.

By the way, Dave, your comment on Disqus is on the the Weather Underground channel discussion about Joes Montana blog, not on Joes channel - I inserted a link underneath your comment for you to get yourself over onto Joes Montana Back Roads channel and into that discussion thread. (Or link in via the Montana Back Road link provided here in comment #13 "Joes future blogs"). Be sure to leave a comment so I know you are located in the new home.

Looking forward to Dotmom's arrival. It wouldn't be the same without Mom.

Re vid . Nope I would definitely have remembered!
Thanks for the walk across the bridge and the marvelous expanse of Refuge and the songs of geese. I could watch for a long time, so peaceful .
That's cool how Mona likes videos. I assume she doesn't have claws? Wouldn't be good for the screen I think. She's so alert. I never could get my cats involved with my tablet. Too small maybe. However one of my cats loved to watch me playing a vid game called Luxor-had a lot of moving Scarabs. Another cat loved Ben Browder of Farscape, a sci fi program.

It's a nice site, Mary but I think you have to have a subscription (expensive - for me) but it would be worth it for a serious wx amateur I think. I looked at the models page but stopped browsing when I saw the subscribe price. Always glad to know of a new source. Maybe the blogs and photos are free access I don't know.

The following is brought over from the last blog as a guide to those finding their feet at Disqus.

Joe has now created his own Channel called Montana Back Roads on Disqus

so for Joe's future blogs use this link

and for Weather Underground and its selection of former WU bloggers use this link

DISQUS

Following the announcement of a shut down to the WU blogs there were obviously a great number of members that were upset about the loss of this blogging community. For some of us the main CAT6 blog and its associates have little or nothing to do with our everyday activity on WU – it was all about the photos and personal blogs, and the people that commented there.

In response to this a long time WU blogger and friend - Aquak9 and her hubby, Rainman32 have kindly set up a new channel on a website called Disqus – their channel is called 'Weather Underground'. This has provided a platform for dozens of members of the WU community, many using their original WU usernames, to jump across to and continue to be able to communicate via personal blogs, with the easy addition of photos and Youtube video inserts in the comments.

For total newbies to Disqus the site may seem confusing but I think with a little information prior to getting over there, the layout will seem familiar to most users in a very short space of time.

Here is a quick guide:

When you go to the Diqus website use this link (bookmark it on all devices you use so you always have it handy) – this will lead you straight into the Weather Underground channel homepage.

Think of that “channel” homepage as being the same thing as the WU Wunderblog Directory page – as here you will find a list of all the current 'discussions'.

A 'discussion' is the new term for a blog – any person with a Disqus account can start a new discussion (blog) of their own within the Weather Underground channel. That way all the former WU members can see who has started a discussion/blog from that single Weather Underground channel home page. To start a new discussion/ blog click on 'What do you want to discuss?' at the top of the channel homepage.

For the rest of us it will mostly be a case of jumping into an already existing discussion/ blog just as we do now:

If you click on any one of the discussion titles (click on the boldest/ largest letters) you will then open up an existing discussion page, and from there the first thing I'd advise is that you select 'newest' from the best, newest or oldest options. Now the comments below will start from newest at the top, just as you are used to in WU blogs.

You will see who has contributed a comment, which was added by typing into the 'Join the discussion' box and tapping 'post' – which you can also now do yourself!

In the same way that on WU we used to click on 'Quote' beneath a comment to show that we were replying to a specific comment, you could now click on 'reply' beneath any comment. The difference now is that any replies to an individual comment are shown directly below – opening up a slightly indented to the right hand side 'thread' of conversation. This is often how comments in online newspapers are laid out – to keep that single thread of conversation in one place. This is also how the new WU Cat6 blog is likely to work – it apparently thinks they will have lots of threads with alternative topics.

I think they will have lots of arguments within arguments, as that is the way it has gone in recent years on the main WU blog page! But for us the indented thread may prove useful if we stray off topic.

As I, for one, are WONT to do.

Now the really good bit with this website is that you can add in photos and videos with such ease! No more having to upload them into a gallery and ticking boxes to categorise images – you just shove them straight at it and it knows what to do!

To add a photo in your comment , click on 'Join the discussion' – then below your comment box just click on the small (tiny) grey 'image upload' symbol. Depending on what type of device you are using it will either offer you the option of taking a photo (with your phone or ipad) to include, or it will offer to choose from photos already existing on your device/ computer. You select your image to upload and it automatically inserts that image into the comment box.

To add a Youtube video you simply copy and paste the 'share' https://youtu....... address into the comment box – you can see the video/ photo appear inside your comment box even before you hit post. It is that easy.

Even better, the photos and videos, once posted, will appear by magic on a desktop computer or laptop – but if you are viewing on a mobile device/ ipad/ tablet/ phone then you click on 'view' just beneath the name/ avatar to open the image up. That way you aren't having to wait for the page to load lots of images when you are potentially viewing it without WIFI, so therefore not eating into your data allowance.

To get back to the 'Weather Underground Channel' homepage from any discussion/blog simply click on the big colourful rainbow over pasture picture at the top of the page.

To get back to Joes Montana Back Roads Channel homepage click on the broad grey stripe at the top of the page.

You can view all this without creating an account on Disqus yourself.

Once you create an account, which you can do without even using your real name (just type in your WU member handle as your username if you wish), and email address (any will do, create a new one just for this purpose if you like) or alternatively use your Facebook/ Google/ Twitter login details. Once you are in you can go to the profile page and change from your username/ real name, for Disqus purposes, into your WU handle. You can also easily insert your WU avatar photo or any other profile photo, to customise your identity, in the 'edit profile' settngs.

You will need to click on a 'Verify your email' link contained in an email that Disqus will send out straight away to whichever email address you sign in with. Only once you gave verified your account (you only do this once) can you then comment on the discussions/ blogs.

You can click to 'follow' people/ discussions/ channels and get updates on what is going on by email if you wish – but read below for the disadvantages in doing so

Under settings – (top right of the page is a cog type icon) in the edit profile settings section, untick the boxes for email notifications that could potentially notify you every time someone comments on the channel – nobody needs that much mail! Plus you have the option (recommended) to make your profile private on your profile settings. The implications of doing this can be found within the helpful Commenter Launch Pad webpage on Rainman32 's discussion, a guide to the newbie users – which I also suggest you have a read of once you are familiar with the layout/ terminology as I've described above. If you choose to go private, all your comments will show up in a public space still, but other users/ followers won't get access to a list of your comments and therefore shown where you have been participating in any discussions. If you leave the go private box unticked, you leave that information open to anyone.

Either way, if you include links to your other identites on FB or Twitter etc on your profile page, that info is always available to everyone.

The discussions/ blogs/ comments you can find there now are simply a reflection of the fact Aquak9 and Rainman32 have opened it up to a whole host of new users from WU to find their way around and get used to the new layout. Once the switchover happens I expect there to be a cleaner feel to it – without all the insertion of random links and photos and topics. That is all just there now because everyone is using that space as practice.

Eventually you will land on the 'Weather Underground' channel page and see a list of discussions opened by familiar blog writers, and within those discussions you will see the familiar names getting involved in posting comments.

You will also get web 'notifications' top of the page on most browsers/ bottom of the page on my phone – and if you click on 'notifications' it will tell you who has replied to your specific comment, that way, though the conversation thread may have moved on above with newer posts (whilst you slept say), any comment directed specifically at you will not be lost to you. You can choose how much info you want directed into your web notifications from the settings/ profile pages – but this is different to the email notification system.

Different as in more useful and less intrusive to your daily life.

The one downside with this Disqus system is apparently each new 'discussion'/ blog automatically closes (though nothing gets deleted) after 7 days. At this point I have learned that either the discussion/blog creator needs to 'awaken' it to allow comments to continue (a moderator can also apparently perform that function) or alternatively a new discussion/ blog can be created. Any of us could actually do that – it doesn't need to be Joealaska every time. Just in case he goes AWOL at any time...

I personally think this is the best way to hold us all together in a new, made for us platform, that also has the huge benefit of bringing along all the lurkers and other WU community members who are not regulars at Joealaska but who still may enliven proceedings from time to time.

Dhaupt. That was the first song at preachers funeral in 1998. Fort Frances Ontario. He was CITIZEN OF THE YEAR in 1995. Between maybe 15,000 people in Fort and International Falls you had to work to find someone who DIDN'T know him. Did devotional on local radio and very sociable. I was there one night when police brought a man cause salvation army was full to use our rollaway in church basement.
Pity about DISCOS. It's personal if they won't take my Twitter. I'm not going to help them out.

I love that hymn Dave. Ive sung the Copeland arrangement in a choir. I know you didn't mean it to be sad. It's just that because of my love for it , your putting it here made me more aware of what I was losing. And so did Joes comment and the fact that he gave his real name at the end.
Haha! If you hadn't added Jud my eyes would dehydrated. Where is that from? Was it "Oklahoma"?

I've not been around much, but I'm intrigued to see that you're in Montana now. I have hopes of traveling there "someday," and I look forward to getting a look at the state through your eyes. I'm landing on Flickr, myself, and I'm looking forward to it. It's going to be different, but workable, I think. And the other options certainly will offer something for everyone. Happy trails!

Sorry Parshall, It wasn't meant to be sad. Here's something maybe more appropriate for Joe's last blog with Jud = joealaska:

Poor Jud is daid
Poor Jud Fry is daid
All gather round his coffin now and cry
He had a heart of gold
And he wasn't very old
Oh why did such a fella have to die

Poor Jud is daid
Poor Jud Fry is daid
He's looking oh so peaceful and serene

And serene!

He's all laid down to rest
With his hands across his chest
His fingernails have never looked so clean

Hey, so we've been pushed out of our comfortable nest. What I have noticed thus far about Flickr is that the photo display modes are very good, but the bloggy parts are somewhat hidden. I know that you can say a lot in comments and descriptions of the photos, but those are hidden beneath the photo. What I don't see is a blog style with the lead off blog followed by comments. Maybe disqus works better in that mode. I don't know yet. But, like it or not, we have crossed a river.

Thanks Joe. Between Facebook, Flickr and Disqus we should manage. I like many of the features of Flickr's photo handling. I'm not quite so clear about how the blog is structured. I haven't yet tried to revive Disqus. That's next.

A sign of the times: my new Powerbook Pro has just been shipped: directly from Shanghai CN! Expected delivery is March 12.

So I will sing my hymn and depart:
Yes, we'll gather at the river,
The beautiful, the beautiful river;
Gather with the saints at the river
That flows by the throne of God.
