What Is My Name ? Part 2

Most of the fish were named in the last blog. There was some question as to the name of one smaller group but those were not the main fish within the photo. So right now.. I am still checking on if the small fish in the second photo with the Squirrelfish were grunt or wrasses. It seems however that both names are for a large group of small fish so I am searching for a photo of my little fish online within both groups. I really dont know what the little darlings are called and was told by someone on the island that all the small willow shape like fish were Wrasses. I did see some of those cleaning the bigger fish as I was also told they would do.. so I kind of leaned toward calling them - Wrasses, the general name for the whole group. Wish I could find a photo of my little fish so I could nail down that name!
However.. the other items were all named as ---

1. Termite nest and there is a paper wasp nest on the lower right hand side It was those of which I was keeping my distance as I have a rather strong reaction should one sting me.
2. Squirrelfish, Long-spined sea urchin, Unknown small fish (grunt? or Wrasses?)
3. Great barracuda
4. Reef squid
5. French angelfish -I was told this was the Gray Angelfish. This photo also has at least two Juveniles bluehead wrasses swimming along side it. Saw a clip on Youtube to ID those.
6. Needlefish seems to be also called Trumpet fish ??
7. Octopus
8. Snake eel -- was told this was a Spotted Moray Eel
9. Peacock flounder - Those darlings can change color btw
10. Blue tang
11. Hawksbill sea turtle
12. Cushion sea star - this one seems to be called Caribbean Starfish

Thank you to dewpoint for her input!

Below are a new set of photos.. Can you name the critters? Keep in mind you may click on the photos to be taken to flickr where you can find links above the photos for larger sizes - "all sizes"

Number ONE B -
While most fish had like two sides to their body, this one seem to have three. the bottom part was a bit flat area so if you looked at this one face on.. the body would be more like that of a triangle. I was not able to get a photo of the thick bottom part of this fish.

IMG_8639

Number TWO B -
Those little yellow striped fish with the interesting markings were about the size of my hand. I did not see many of those but they seem to hide under the rocks and coral. I had to float very still in order to even get this photo of this small school. They were very shy.

IMG_8625

Number THREE B -
I have two views of this fish. It was sitting very still along the rocks and I almost did not see it at first. It was about a hand span and half in length.

Number FOUR B -
Small fish which were about a finger in length with the two dark stripes along the body.
For extra, name the coral behind the fish which is damaged. Many people do not know that even the smallest touch can injure and kill the coral and always you should use extreme care and not touch them.

IMG_8512

Number FIVE B -
This fish was about the size of a dinner plate. Seem to be aware of me and followed me around.. or one of it's family on this day was always trailing me. I am glad it was not any bigger! But I did wonder about the type of teeth it might have? Each time when I turned back and faced it, the fish would dart away a bit of distance.

IMG_8494

Number SIX B -
This photo has two kinds of small fish, both about the size of my hand. One has the pattern of dots along the body while the others have just one stripe.

IMG_8457

Number SEVEN B -
Those guys seem to love to be only in schools. The color is not as good as I would like cause they would quickly swim away from me when I tried to get closer. The top part of the body was like air bushed in yellow with the bar marks over most of the body but for the face and lower part. The rest of the body was of a pale white or silver color.

IMG_8411

Number EIGHT B -
I felt this fish had the most oddest color. As if somebody took this fish and painted it those reds, blues and green colors just for fun.
I found those fish were nipping at the coral and if you watched, you could hear the sharp little popping noise as it took the bites. I would guess it has some rather sharp teeth to be eating on the coral.
Do take the time to download the original size of this photo to see the detail of those wild colors.
IMG_8409

Number NINE B -
This was taken when I was in some rather deep water so the color is not as good as it would had been in the shallow parts. I think however you can ID this just from the body shape alone. This fellow was about the length of my arm.
IMG_8400

Number TEN B -
Not a fish but part of the coral life. Can you name this? I so wanted to touch the surface as I found it rather interesting but after seeing so much of this dead and white bone, I kept my hands and fins far away from it. It seem to have a bumpy like surface much like the starfish. The size of this from the closest part to me to the other side away.. was OVER the length of five feet wide.

Number ELEVEN B -
One land item here.. name this flower - When it bloom, it only lasted ONE day and then folded away. It was best viewed in the early morning hours as it started to fade as the sun got around 2 pm in the early afternoon.

Number TWELVE B -
Also a land critter and I know it is a lizard but can you name what kind it is? Pretty cool to view in the larger size on Flickr. so enjoy!

What is my name?

What Is My Name ?

Time for the new blog and this one will have photos of some of the things I have seen in and around St. John.

Can you name the different items? In some cases you will be asked to name the HOME of where the critter is living within such as the very first photo of something I found in a tree. Now there are two nest of something there but most will only spot the larger one.
I will put the your name/nick beside each photo which you ID within my blog. You may click on the photo to be taken to Flickr where you may also view a larger size of the photo.

Good luck folks!

Number ONE -
Found this up in a tree over my head as we parked the car to enter a beach on St. John. As I was taking the photo, I saw the second nest in the lower right hand corner. I backed away quickly as I am very familiar with those, the second critters.
I know the photo is not a sharp as it could be but since I have such an allergic reaction to the second critters, I just could not go back near them again.
Give as much detail however on the first nest, as those are not common to the main land.

IMG_8143

Number two -
Wow! What eyes you have! I have also never seen such color in a fish but here you go.. Anyone know the name of the red fish?
Then for extra fun, name the OTHER TWO critters within this photo. A little extra note about the ones in the background and up in the rocks, I think I got a tip of one of those in the palm of my hand as I was climbing out of the waters. Have not been able yet to dig it out and now my hand is red in the area.

IMG_8626

Number Three -
Oh Man, What great big teeth you have!
This was rather a small fish only the length of your arm but there was a much bigger one my daughter saw earlier which was just about the size of her whole body!

IMG_8629

Number Four -
This one was only about the size of one hand span. I saw later a group of those.. called "school?" As I got near to the group, each one would turn around as so the tentacles end was pointed toward me. I never knew those guys had so much color within the body. I saw some with a deep blue color and others as this one were more brown. All had that bit of green however around the eyes.

IMG_8475

Number Five -
Such a calm fish! I was able to follow it around till I finally got a good view/shot of the side where one could see this rather flat fish and the detail of those pretty spots. This critter made me think of a floating bit lace in the colors of gray and blue.

IMG_8536

Number Six -
This critter was found right at the surface of the water. I almost did not see it as it blended in with the waves and reflections of the sun/water. The size was a little less than one hand span.

IMG_8517

Number seven and I have two views of this critter as it was tucked away in the rocks. -
View ONE ........

Number seven again -

IMG_8615

Number Eight -
Warning, if you do not like snakes.. beware of the waters. However, I only saw one of those during my time in the waters. Maybe they are not that common?
IMG_8465

Number Nine -
I really loved the detail within the color and markings of this fish. I hope you are able to go to flickr and view the much large size of this photo.

IMG_8442

Number Ten -
Such a deep blue and a wonder to see as the sunlight reflected off the edges of this fish.

IMG_8321

Number Eleven -
Ok, Yes, I know it is a turtle but WHAT is the species?

IMG_8158

Number Twelve -
So, here you go again. Another species question since there are over than 1800 known species of this fish.. which by the way.. IS NOT A TRUE FISH! They are animals belonging to the Phylum Echinodermata. I have found TWO names for those btw.
Those guys can grown up to 10 - 30 cm in diameter.

IMG_8454

I am going stop at the number 12. Good luck!

Hey! I found a bug in my blog! Oh... I think it is sweet bug who is my friend!

Where the heck am I ?
Posted by: redagainPatti, 6:03 PM GMT on July 19, 2009 +0

I planned to post updates of our trip in my blog but....
The Internet has been down more than up but tonight, was able to upload some photos. After almost a week but finally I am now able to share a few photos with you all. I do hope you enjoyed as I do wish you all could be here with me. Maybe one or two of you might could drop in for a visit?

So I am no longer in Mississippi and I have not yet made it to the Redwoods. Maybe that will happen next year. Instead this summer, I have went south from my home. Lots of water, sun and sand can be found all around me. Can you guess where I am?

First I left by car and then flew out four hours on a plane. After we landed, we rented another car but still had one more means of traveling before we reached where we would sleep for the next ten days during our adventures in the land of sun.

It turned out the the first adventure was getting on to a ferry.

The ferry was the only way to get to the final destination. It seems that that there were a lot of other folks heading in the same direction. The men on the ferry really packed the boat full. One driver climbed in and out of his window to move about on the ferry during the 25 minute trip. It was really something to watch how the cars and trucks got parked on the deck. Below is a photo of the ship on the way to our island.

close together on the ferry

Here is the photo of how one guy got back into his car. He used the window and the car next to him to climb out onto and back in again later when he returned to his vehicle.

How to get into your car part 2

I mean those guys on this boat really know how to pack the boat. I could not get a toe between those cars!

so close together, you could kiss the other one

Some folks just stayed put in the cars during the trip. I took a book with me the second time we had to travel back to get to the market and drop a friend off at the airport.

We ant going anywhere

Later I will post some photos of the critters and other things I have seen during the last few days. I leave you will this one last photo...
Seems they drive a bit different from the way we do in most parts of the USA. Oh, yea, .. the same flag is still waving at the post office by the way.

They do love the trees here but..

OK, WHERE THE HECK AM I AT ?

GRADS to shoreacres who first nailed the area as Virgin Islands but was not sure of herself.
Then Latitude25 narrowed it down to St. Thomas and St. John
OGal hit the nail right on the head with St. John!
Good job folks!

Are you ready to guess Where on St. John ??? I am overlooking a "hole"
with the name being too darn sweet to say it but for just once in a while. OGal would understand my reasons.

Very good Latitude25 who narrowed it down to only two places I could be for the rest in here to guess from the clues given. I now guess Latitude25 stepped off for a bit because shoreacres nail it on the head with the answer of Chocolate Hole!

Yes! Sand and water time ahead but flowers within here. ENJOY!
Posted by: redagainPatti, 1:38 AM GMT on July 10, 2009 +1
OK! I am SO looking forward to this next week because I am heading OUT of my little town in Mississippi to a bit of land somewhere south of me. My Game Plan is to take photos of the area and up load them up to let you guess just where I am at? What do you think? Would that be a bit of fun? So, if the Internet works on this small spot and I am able to upload... and take photos.. Anyrate, I am not going to share, just yet, where I am going.

Oh Gee! Maybe I should say in the title, - WARNING, sand. water and SUN ahead? You see, I was in this area, like about seven years ago and fell in love with the whole place. I was only there for one day but boy, did my back get fried! While it has been some years, I still recall the blue waters, sand, and oh yes.. the sun! I had to stay inside for a day or two. Later when I did go back outside, I had to wear a scarf over my shoulders! Maybe this time I will do better and not get burn in the first place. Wish me luck on that! OK?

I do have two bottles of sunscreen to wear this time. I have a nice long shirt to wear in the water too. I will take or buy a large hat too. Oh, I am so looking forward to seeing again the breach and wonderful fish. I blew a large batch of money to get one of those waterproof boxes to put my camera in. So maybe, I will have some underwater shots too! I wonder what I am forgetting to pack?

Meanwhile, I am so very much looking forward to my date with the sand and water.
I best get back to packing!

update -----
Just wanted to leave some flowers to make the place look warm and pretty....
Those are my photos taken this week from the yard of a lday who lives just down the road.

With a hug and love to all,

As we travel about this holiday period and down the roads of time, BE SAFE. Take heart and what is OURS and the color of OUR FREEDOM, Thanks to those who keep the flag waving over the land of the Free.

Below is a photo of one of those who do the duty to our land. keeping the fires of freedom alive and the flowers of freedom growing, sometimes even with their blood.

Marching sometimes on our own

Marching eyes forward
Marching in differ colors
Marching looking backwards toward our roots
Marching with red, white and blue

So many Lands,
So many Colors,
One picks Three,
Red, White, and Blue,
They wear and wave all Three

So many Lands
So many Colors
One picks Three
Red, White, and Green
They wear and wave just Green.

Freedom is but a weaving of many things,
Between the people and their land.
Each symbol, sound, and color has a meaning,
Which only the people can see.
Take heart in that the Master Weaver is in charge.
