So there were some storms Friday night and rain early Saturday.. but this mess happen sometime Sunday from what I was told. I was NOT at home but up in Tupelo with family. As I stopped to check my mail, I looked up at my house to see a mess of green leaves and brown limbs laying on top of the roof. I think my heart stopped beating for a bit.
WHY is it when you get things paid off.. something always happen?
With the limb still hanging onto the trunk however, it may be the power of the heavy limb did not hit .. too hard onto the roof. Thankfully the tree has not entered into the living part of the house. Last time when I checked this morning before going to work, it had not even come into the attic. The limb must be removed before I can truly see what has happen to the roof. Will update you all later.
UPDATE - Aug. 28 -
It seems IN THREE PLACES, the decking is cracked and with any weight at all will bow downward. The shingle are still there.. but a bit wore looking as they are missing some of the asphalt.. like as if they were rubbed down. However folks who have looked at them feel they will still do the job as to keeping the rain out. The beams inside and under the roof seem to be all looking ok and have taken the weight of the tree limb without cracking. The game plan is to shore up the weaken areas of the decking from within the attic area and keep an eye out for water spots. However the three different guys that looked at the roof, feel it is all going to be fine even without any extra support under the roof. This with the removing of the tree which is the only that might cause problems(weight) in the future.
The main cost will be the tree - I am removing it and the danger of any more falling limbs.. all feel the roof will be fine. Other nearby trees would have to uproot to reach the house. I do have a pine tree on the northeast side, but since it saved my house during the last hurricane, I have a special feeling for it. Look at the full picture of the house from across the street. You can see it is missing half of it's limbs.
I will take my time on looking at the different types of roof covering and will replace the whole thing within the next two years.. sooner if I find any wet spots in the attic.
Detail from the westside of where the tree limb is still attached to the main trunk.
Different angle of limbs and the backside of the house.

Deputy vs. Lawyer
A lawyer runs a stop sign and gets pulled over by a sheriff's deputy.
He thinks that he is smarter than the deputy because he is a lawyer from
New York and is certain that he has a better education than any cop. He decides to prove this to himself and have some fun at the deputy's expense.
Deputy says, "License and registration, please."
Lawyer says, "What for?"
Deputy says, " You didn't come to a complete stop at the stop sign."
Lawyer says, "I slowed down, and no one was coming."
Deputy says, "You still didn't come to a complete stop. License and
registration, please."
Lawyer says, "What's the difference?"
Deputy says, "The difference is, you have to come to a complete stop,
that's the law. License and registration, please!"
Lawyer says, "If you can show me the legal difference between slow down
and stop, I'll give you my license and registration; and you give me the
ticket. If not, you let me go and don't give me the ticket."
Deputy says, "Sounds fair. Exit your vehicle, sir."
At this point, the deputy takes out his nightstick and starts beating
the ever-loving stuffing out of the lawyer and says, "Do you want me to
stop or just slow down?"
Have a great Labor Day Weekend
Take care and Be safe

Have a Great Sunday. :-)
There were two hickory trees that uprooted from the east side of my place.. but the first one hit THEIR house with the second one trying to hit me. The rings were counted and it was found that both trees were over 80 years old.
The oak tree I lost in the back yard.. was over 165 years and I am sure by the width of the remaining tree in the back yard, it is over 170 years. Will post what we find after the tree is cut down.
I had always thought about cutting this current problem tree down cause it was standing so close to the house but after losing my fav tree from the back yard during the storm... I put it off cutting this one down. The fav tree had a large swing hanging in it and was a fav spot of my children when they lived at home with me. Since the current problem tree is the last one to give me shade.. I put off the removing of it.
After all of this is done.. I will have only one oak tree left from the five I had on my place. The last remainin oak is at the very back of my place, few feet from the Highway 12. It gives the house no shade and is dropping limbs all the time onto the ground below it.
WHO DOES WHAT
A man and his wife were having an argument
about who should brew the coffee each morning.
The wife said, "You should do it because you get up first,
and then we don't have to wait as long to get our coffee.
The husband said, "You are in charge of cooking around here and
you should do it, because that is your job, and I can just wait for my
coffee."
Wife replies, "No, you should do it, and besides, it is in the Bible that
the man should do the coffee."
Husband replies, "I can't believe that, show me."
So she fetched the Bible, and opened the New Testament and showed him at
the top of several pages, that it indeed
says .......... "HEBREWS"
Have a relaxing, enjoyable day.
Take care and be safe,

I look at the tree in my backyard that hangs on an angle precuriously over my house, knowing that a strong nor'easter or tropical storm would do the same. gotta get it trimmed especially after looking at your pics
The cost of the limb was 580.00 to remove it.. as they had to use a crane to lift it off the roof. The cost of the roof right now.. is the tar and my time painting it.. I will replace the whole roof after I get that big tree down.
.. In all.. I was very lucky it hit those lower branches and did not take the full dive into my house. Then I would had damage to the ceilings, floors and no telling what else to the attic area..
Was that a sweet gum that dropped the limb onto the house? Looks like it, from what I can tell from the pics. If it was, those thing drop limbs if you look at them hard! We have several around our yard; have taken a couple out already. Limbs are always coming down. No wind, nothing and you'll walk out one morning and there's this huge limb on the ground. There's a really, really BIG one in the backyard and I just know it will come through the house, if we have a 'cane come too close. I love shade; I really do. But now, I look at houses with a jaundiced eye, if they have trees in the yard. We'll be driving along and I'll spot a really nice house. "Look at that! That's a nice house. Uh-oh! Too many trees too close to the house. One good hurricane and that house is toast."
I remember you doing a blog about that oak that came down during Katrina and you were trying to find someone that could use the wood.
It is a red oak... but one guy tried to call it a Pin Oak.. he didnt know his trees.
My area of town is called Green Oaks and I moved here in 1991 under five of them. All over 100 years old.
Lighting hit and killed the first one I had to remove in 94. Then there was a bad storm that topped another one in 2000. I had to remove the trunk of that one too.. just like the large one that Katrina took down. All of those three are what is called Post Oak. Very hard wood while I think the Red Oak is a shade softer, I think. However I do know the Pin Oak does not grow as tall or live as long as your Red and Post Oaks can.
The last one in the very back of the yard is another Post Oak. It is also the very biggest of all the trees I had in the yard. It is far enough away that it would have to uproot at the ground level to hit the house. The powerlines running down the highway behind the house are what is in danger from this tree if it should top out like two of my Oak trees did during the storms. However, a few folks from the city looked at it and think the lines are ok so the old lady is still standing tall.
